Anatomy of a Temperature Measurement System
A system approach to accurate readings in industrial plants.

The Sensor
The "thermometer" that feels the temperature.
Sensor Details
Two main types: RTD for high accuracy and Thermocouple for high temperatures and ruggedness. They convert temperature into a measurable signal.

The Thermowell
A protective sleeve for the sensor.
Thermowell Details
Protects the sensor from pressure, flow, and chemicals. Allows for easy sensor replacement without draining the line.

The Transmitter
The electronics that clean up the signal.
Transmitter Details
Converts the sensor signal to a robust 4-20 mA or digital value. Linearizes the output and includes built-in diagnostics for reliability.
1. Sensors: Choosing the right "thermometer"
RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector)
Where it shines: High accuracy, good stability up to ~850 °C.
Points to watch: Needs careful wiring to prevent errors.
Use a 4-wire setup for best accuracy.
Thermocouple
Where it shines: Very rugged, measures above 1000 °C.
Points to watch: Drifts faster over time.
Creates a voltage from a junction of two metals.
2. Thermowells: Protecting the sensor
The thermowell acts as armor, allowing you to replace the sensor without draining the line.
-
•
Material: Must match the process chemistry and temperature.
-
•
Shape: Tapered or stepped tips respond faster.
-
•
Length: Immerse at least 5-10 times the well's diameter.
-
•
Vibration: Fast flow can cause vibration. Use design tools to check.
3. Transmitters: Cleaning up the signal
A smart transmitter converts the tiny sensor signal into a robust, reliable output.
-
•
Signal Conversion: Transforms resistance/millivolts into a 4-20 mA or digital value.
-
•
Linearization: Ensures the output is a direct temperature value.
-
•
Built-in Checks: Monitors for open circuits or sensor drift.
Putting It All Together: A Simple Checklist
Many factors influence the accuracy of a temperature measurement system. The illustration above highlights only the key considerations. For tailored analysis of your specific application, we would be happy to assess your requirements.
